Jones International University


Jones International University (JIU) is a private, for-profit university based in Centennial, Colorado. It considers itself as the pioneer in online learning and offers its programs purely in the online format. It was established by Glenn R. Jones in 1993 as the first university to exist completely online. It traces its inspiration to its founder’s earlier initiative in 1987 called the Mind Extension University. It was a cable television network which enabled more than 30,000 students to take their desired courses via television from various colleges and universities.

Jones International University holds the distinction of being the first fully online university in the US to be accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The university is accredited to grant associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. These include the Associate of Arts in Business Administration, B.A. in Business Communication, MEd in Adult Educators and Administrators, MEd Programs for Licensed Educators, MEd Programs Leading to Initial Licensure (ECIA, ELA-PAL, SCIA), MEd Programs Leading to Initial Licensure (IT), MEd Programs Leading to Initial Licensure (ESL, ESLB).

Doctoral programs at Jones International University include Doctorate in Business Administration, EdS in K-12 Education Leadership, and Doctorate in Education. Also offered are the School of Business Certificate Program and the School of Education Certificate Programs. Associate degrees cost $520.00 per credit hour while bachelor degrees cost the same per credit hour. Students are required to complete 60 credit hours for an associate’s degree and 120 credit hours for a bachelor’s degree. Associate degrees are usually completed within 20 months while it would take 40 months to complete a bachelor’s degree. Cost of master’s degree programs range from $600.00 to $805.00 per credit hour and requires 30 to 48 credit hours to be completed. Students can complete the programs from 20 to 32 months. Doctorate programs cost $805.00 per credit hour and require completion of 36 to 72 credit hours within 24 to 36 months. The School of Business Certificate Program costs $600.00 per credit hour and requires the completion of 9 credit hours within 6 months.

Jones International University offers academic programs to active-duty, reserve, guard, veterans, retired, military families, and active employees of the Department of Defense. It provides the JIU Military Advancement Program to help military students map out their path to success through the accomplishment of educational and career goals. The program provides for top-ranked online degree programs and a flexible course structure.

Programs are made affordable in JIU through military tuition assistance, 20% graduate tuition scholarship, undergraduate book program, application and academic fee waiver, service branch scholarship and the G.I. Bill. The university also maintains military partnerships through the Air Force Associate to Baccalaureate Cooperative Partner, GoArmyEd Tuition Assistance and the Recruiting Command Concurrent Admissions Program in the Army, being a SOCCOAST (Coast Guard), SOCMAR (Marine), and SOCNAV (Navy) university. JIU is also a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity College Consortium.

The military tuition rate at Jones International University is $250.00 per credit hour for undergraduate study and 20% discount for graduate degree programs. Annual cost is $4,500.00 while annual cost for traditional students is $15,600.00. There are about 4,367 students enrolled in JIU, 40% of whom are male and 60% are female. JIU is not a member of any athletic conference.
