South University

South University is a private for-profit university based in Savannah, Georgia. It was founded by John Draughon as Draughon’s Practical Business College in 1899.

It eventually adopted the name Draughon’s Junior College until 1985. Although already acquired by the family of John T. South as early as 1974, the change of name happened only in 1985. It adopted its present name when it achieved university status in 2002. The university is now owned by the Education Management Corporation (EDMC).

Additional Campuses

Aside from its main campus in Savannah, additional campuses of South University have been established in Roundrock, Texas; Columbia, South Carolina; Montgomery, Alabama; Novi, Michigan; Glen Allen, Virginia; Tampa, Florida; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Royal Palm Beach, Florida; and Austin, Texas. South University is comprised of the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Health Professions, College of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, School of Criminal Justice, and the College of Creative Arts and Design at The Art Institute of Dallas and The Art Institute of Forth Worth. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees.

The College of Health Professions offers programs in Heath Science, Medical Assisting, Physical Therapist Assisting, Anesthesiologist Assistant, and Physician Assistant Studies. The College of Nursing offers the Bachelor’s and Master of Science in Nursing. The College of Business offers programs in Business, Healthcare, and Information Technology.

Art Degree Programs are offered in the areas of Design, Media Arts, Culinary, and Fashion. Criminal Justice Programs include Legal Studies and Paralegal Studies.

Military students

Should consider online programs in pursuing educational goals. South University offers Business Online Programs including A.S. in Business Administration, A.S. in Accounting, Bachelor of Business Administration, M.S. in Leadership, M.B.A., and Master of Public Administration.

Criminal Justice Programs offered online consist of A.S. in Criminal Justice, B.S. in Criminal Justice, and M.S. in Criminal Justice. Online Healthcare Programs include A.S. in Allied Health Sciences, B.S. in Healthcare Management, B.S. in Heath Science, and the M.B.A. in Healthcare Administration. Information Technology Programs offered online include A.S. and B.S. in Information Technology, and the M.S. in Information Systems and Technology. Other online programs are the B.S.N. Completion Program, Accelerated R.N. to M.S.N., M.S. in Nursing, and the B.A. in Psychology. Paralegal Studies and Legal Studies are offered partly online.

Undergraduate tuition is $390.00 per credit hour while Master’s degree tuition ranges from $400.00 to $540.00 per credit hour depending on the area of study. The R.N. to B.S.N. Degree program costs $380.00 per credit hour.

Active-duty, drilling and active members of the Reserve and National Guard are offered the Active-Duty Scholarship by South University. This means that eligible service members pay the only tuition of $ 166.00 per credit hour.

Graduate-level programs are offered to military students with a 10% discount rate. Veterans are entitled to educational benefits under the Montgomery G.I. Bill, Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, and the Veterans Scholarship. Spouses of active-duty military personnel are also given a 10% tuition discount in all undergraduate and master’s programs. The “Top-Up” Program supplements other tuition assistance programs when still required.

South University is not a member of any athletic conference. The student population at the Savannah Campus is 1300, 24% of whom are male and 76% are female.
