Can You Get a Scholarship For ROTC?
If you’re a high school student who’s interested in both receiving a higher education and serving your country, you may be wondering if you can get a scholarship for ROTC participation.
The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps is a great program that trains individuals for officer positions within the military, and, thankfully, you can get a scholarship for participating in it.
There are some requirements that you’ll have to meet, however.
According to the official U.S. Army website, the scholarship for ROTC is available to high school students who are planning on attending a four-year university.
You also have to be a U.S. citizen and be at least 17 years old, but you can’t be any older than 26. By the time you start in the program, you’ll have to have a high school diploma or something similar.
As far as your academic work goes, only students with a high school grade point average of at least 2.50 will be considered. Applicants are required to take either the SAT or the ACT.
The minimum allowable score between the verbal and mathematics portions is 920 for the SAT – the writing section isn’t taken into account.
Pupils who take the ACT must get a score of at least 19, and again, the writing section doesn’t count. All students accepted into the program also need to meet or exceed certain fitness standards.
Commitment to the Military
By accepting a scholarship for ROTC, you’re making a big commitment. After you graduate with a bachelor’s degree, you must be willing to serve your country for at least eight years.
While this may seem like a long time, it’s not so bad when you consider that four of those years can be fulfilled by serving in the Individual Ready Reserve.
After you’ve worked for the military full-time for four years, you can elect to serve in the IRR.
You won’t get paid for this, but you also won’t have to participate in training or drill unless you’re called up. Some ROTC participants may be able to serve part-time in the reserves instead of full-time.
Now that you know about the qualifications and the commitment involved with this program, you’re probably wondering about what the scholarship for ROTC actually entails.
For each year that you are in the program, you should receive a scholarship that covers:
- Living expenses
Your tuition and fees should be applied directly to your college, but the money for your books and living expenses will be given to you in the form of an allowance.
Students’ living stipends may vary, but you may be given up to $5,000 per year. After graduating college, you’ll be able to get a position as an officer.
This means that you’ll be eligible for a higher salary than you would have been entitled to if you had just enrolled right out of high school or after college without participating in the ROTC program.
