Inspired by the mottos of other branches of the military, such as the Coast Guard's "Semper Paratus" ("Always Ready"), the Marine Corps' "Semper Fidelis" ("Always Faithful"), and the Navy's unofficial motto "Semper Fortis" ("Always Courageous"), Sanchez developed "Semper Supra" as a symbol of the Space Force's commitment to 'always be above' in the realm of space.
Sanchez's idea was encouraged by his leadership, and he submitted a formal proposal for the motto. The phrase was unofficially selected in April 2020, and he received a surprising call from the head of the Space Force, informing him that his motto had been chosen. The Space Force confirmed his contribution to the service's history, stating, "We're proud of your motto; we're proud to have it. You're a part of history".
