Browning SA-22 History

The Browning 22 Semi-Auto rifle, also known as the SA-22, is a takedown rifle developed by FN Herstal based on a John Browning patent. Production began in 1914 in Belgium, continued until 1973, and resumed in 1974 in Japan by Miroku. FN exported it to the U.S. in 1956, and Remington produced a licensed version from 1919-1935. China's Norinco created a similar model known as the Model ATD. The SA-22, chambered in .22 LR caliber, was the first production semi-automatic rifle in this caliber, earning it classic status. It features blued steel and walnut construction, downward ejection for user safety, and has been offered in various engraving grades.

With over half a million units sold since 1914, it is widely collected, particularly those manufactured in Belgium. Notable design elements include a lack of a side-mounted ejection port, a feature intended for a wide age range of users, and the initial loading port location on the top of the stock, later shifted to the right side of the buttstock in subsequent models.
